How To Get Around Oahu Hawaii By Bus and Waikiki Trolley
Getting Around With TheBus On Oahu
Literally, and conveniently, the Hawaii Public Transit system is called TheBus. TheBus is a very convenient way to get around the entire island for a small price.
Oahu Public Transit Adult (Persons over 17 years old)
One way tickets are inexpensive at $2.50 to any spot on any of the routes. However, that’s one-way. If you got off to walk around or go to the beach and later want to get on and go to a different location or back to your original spot…then that’s another $2.50. Once you get used to the routes and know where you’re going, though, then $2.50 can be a bargain.
If you’re going to be using the public bus on Oahu a lot, or as your primary source of transportation, then the monthly or yearly may be a better option.
$60 Unlimited Monthly usage during a calendar month (Regular and Express)
$660 for Unlimited Yearly usage during the calendar year (Regular and Express)
Children under 5 years old when accompanied by an adult are FREE.
Oahu Public Transit Youth (Persons 6 to 17 Years old)
Pretty much it is cut in half.
- One way tickets are $1.25
- $30.00 for monthly unlimited usage. (Regular and Express)
- $330 monthly unlimited usage. (Regular and Express)
Oahu Public Transit “TheBus” Visitor Fare
Visitors are luck to be able to purchase a 4-day TheBus Pass for unlimited usage of Regular and Express during the 4-day, consecutive period for which the pass was purchased. So, while you can’t visit Oahu for a week and buy a 4 day pass and use it on ANY 4 days that you’re on Oahu, the visitor pass does make it a great way to get around and explore the island.
You can purchase visitor passes for TheBuss at ABC Stores in Waikiki and Ala Moana Center as well as the Kalihi Transit Center (address below)

Getting Around With The Waikiki Trolley on Oahu
The Waikiki Trolley is an inexpensive way to get around Oahu if you’re familiar with the area already. That means, you either already moved to Hawaii and you’re living here OR you have enough Oahu and Waikiki visits under your belt to truly understand where the trolley takes you. The Waikiki Trolley isn’t as wide-roving as TheBus and won’t hit all of the smaller spots that Oahu’s public bus system will. That being said, it’s a great option if you want to get around to all of the major visitation spots. The Waikiki Trolley even offers deals for unlimited rides if used within a certain number of days.
Using the Waikiki Trolley for Getting Around Oahu
For reference, the Waikiki Trolley currently travels as far to the east of Oahu as Sea Life Park. From that area it’s just short walk to Makapu’u Lighthouse and Makapu’u Beach Park. The trolley also goes as far west as the Bishop Museum. Again, this isn’t the catch all for transportation all over the island but if you’re just wanting to spend the day traveling to attractions then you can do worse than opting for the Waikiki Trolley.
If you’re already living on Oahu and you have friends or family staying in the Waikiki/downtown Honolulu area, then the Waikiki Trolley is a great tip to give them if they’re just wanting a day when they can get lost on their own without you dragging them to all of YOUR favorite places. (Been there, done that!) There are a lot of different options for taking the Waikiki Trolley and it seems to offer some great packages for panoramic tours, scenic tours, whole Island tours, shopping tours, and historical tours.
Here is a link to their price guide. As you can see, it’s not as cheap as TheBus for getting around Oahu but the Waikiki Trolley does offer themed travel and transportation around areas of Oahu that will allow you do what you’re looking to do. While TheBus does take you to (or near) many of the same areas, with the Waikiki Trolley you can be assured that you’ll to destinations that you want without having to sit around waiting stop after stop.
