Ever since the dawn of time man has had a fascination with the night sky. Once the telescope came along it allowed us to see wondrous things that we never imagined. Today, more people than ever enjoy stargazing with telescopes. If you find yourself on the island of Oahu in Hawaii, then there are a few places that you should make sure to check out. They will offer you spectacular views and will have you wanting to come back for more.
– The North Shore
This is one of the best places on the island to stargaze with telescopes. This area is plenty dark and does not have much light pollution.
Some people swear that the area between Turtle Bay and Waimea is the best place to set your equipment up to see the stars in all of their glory. Usually, this area is quiet too if you want to peacefully stargaze without a bunch of noise or people.
– Diamond Head Crater
Diamond Head has some of the best views on the island. It is located on the other side of Waikiki Beach and there is a large parking area at the base of the volcano crater that would be ideal for setting up for an evening of stargazing.
Due to all the lights from the city, you may not be able to see stars all the time, especially when it’s a full moon. However, on darker nights, you’ll certainly see quite a few stars shining bright.
There might be other people in the area but this is a tourist area so that is to be expected.
– Kaena Point
Kaena Point is a local hangout but it also has pretty amazing views of the stars. This place is more of a spot you would want to bring a group of friends to that like to stargaze as well. This would be a great get together spot to set up telescopes and share stories.
If you like your stargazing spot quiet then you might want to consider a different spot, especially if it is on the weekend.
This is where the Astronomy Club has their gatherings. There is also a local beach park in the area that is a favorite for the serious stargazer.
It is very dark there and there is little noise pollution. In case you are not attending the Dark Sky Party then try the beach park for a nice quiet night looking up at the stars.
– Wahiawa Heights
This area has a few small parks that are usually quiet at night. It is nice and dark and usually quiet.
No need to worry about people hanging out on the weekend. You most likely will have the area to yourself in the evening.
Wherever you decide to set up your telescopes on the island you will probably have a pretty good view of the sky unless you are in a heavily populated area with a lot of lights such as downtown Waikiki. The darker the area the better your view of the stars will be. These spots will give you a good view with less light so you can see everything in the night sky. You can explore the island or ask locals or astronomers where some good spots might be that were not covered previously
